You are probably familiar with the Nativity Scene tableau which is installed by the village each Christmas in the Great Barn. This year we will be installing the tableau on Saturday 19th December and dismantling it on Sunday 3rd January 2016. There will be the customary procession through the Village for the annual Carol Service in the Great Barn at 1800 hrs on Christmas Eve for which a Road Closure Order is being processed by the Vale of White Horse District Council and of which you will be made aware. The components of the tableau , mainly dressed figures, are very fragile and very accessible to the public and, fortunately, over the years, have experienced little or no interference or damage. The Great Barn is not locked at night so the tableau will be accessible at all times.
The Barn and the outlying buildings seem to be visited at night by littering and drinking youth and this appears to be a more frequent occurrence. We have therefore decided to reduce the display period this year by ten days to the dates above so as to reduce exposure and risk of possible vandalism. This is an event which is much enjoyed year by year by families and especially children from all over the Vale and by National Trust visitors to the Barn and we are very anxious to ensure that this tradition is maintained without harm, for the enjoyment of many. We hope that your evening walks might include the Barn. If there is a problem the guidance we have is to ring the police on 101 to report damage or an incident which has already occurred or late night noise but to ring 999 if an incident is actually happening or there is smoke or fire.
